My grandfather passed away quietly this morning in the arms my grandmother - his lifelong love and companion. Of all of the people I have been honored to love, he was one of the greatest, wisest, and most beautiful people I have ever known.

My mind fades to the many memories of my childhood. My first time fishing with my Pop Pop, helping him tend his garden during the warm summer months in South Jersey, listening with awe to his Tom-Sawyer-like stories of growing up in West Pennsylvania, hearing about his service in the Navy, or how he took his humble beginnings pumping gas at age 12 to care for his mother and siblings during the great depression and worked his way up the ladder to East Coast rep for Getty in that same industry.

My grandfather taught me that there are no limits in life if you put your head and your heart into what you want to accomplish. He taught me to do the right thing no matter what. He was the kind of person who would chase someone down just to return the roll of money they had forgotten at the bank drive-through. He was the kind of person that inspired those around him to be more. And I know that I am more because I had him as a role model to look up to throughout my life.

The memories I have of this remarkable human being will live in my heart until the day I too wish this strange and fleeting existence a final adieu and pass into the eternal. I only hope that I can be like him in my own life.

Somewhere in the vastness of space-time, I know I’m still a little boy sitting by your side along the banks of a creek, deep in the peace of the forest, waiting to catch my first fish and see your eyes light up with pride and youthful reminiscence. You will always be my hero, my aspiration, and a source of the wisdom that guides me through this life.

You were the greatest, PopPop! Your life and legacy will go on. You will always be remembered by so many lives you touched through your time here on earth. I consider myself profoundly blessed, as well as privileged, to have loved and learned from you.

Until we meet again!
